The Nyunga were once part of the Wudjari people who lived in southwestern Australia. They split over the issue of circumcision. Others in the tribe demanded they all adopt circumcision for men, and there was a split. The Nyunga moved to New Norcia where Bishop Rosendo Salvado, a missionary, decided to defend their interests. The Nyunga were accused of stealing sheep from sheepherders. This missionary defended them on the grounds that they were not stealing since the shepherds had driven away the kangaroos. The Nyunga depended on kangaroos for food.
Many of the Nyunga now live in Goomalling, in western Australia.
Like other aborigine peoples, the Nyunga have had to adapt to the dominant culture. Some have taken on ordinary jobs while others struggle generation after generation.
Most of the Nyunga are Roman Catholic.
The Nyunga people need to get higher education so they can take on higher paying jobs.
Pray for the Nyunga people to put Jesus Christ first in their lives.
Pray for them to focus their spirituality in Christ rather than an institution.
Pray for the Lord to bless them spiritually and economically.
